GALLERY VISIT: THE BROWSING ROOM GALLERY
APR. 27, 2017
Following the renovation of the former congregational library from which it takes its name (and located off the Fellowship Hall on the first floor), The Browsing Room Gallery at Downtown Presbyterian Church (Nashville) opened in July 2014 and quickly became a popular stop on the First Saturday 5th Avenue Art Crawl.
Curated by DPC Artists-in-Residence, The Browsing Room Gallery offers a regular rotation of exhibitions featuring their own work and local guests artists.
Despite a large collection of contemporary art displayed throughout the historic building, the transformation of The Browsing Room Gallery marked the first time Downtown Presbyterian Church dedicated a space solely to art exhibitions.
The gallery expanded the types of work for exhibition and now includes freestanding sculpture and installations. It has proven a successful space for both group and solo shows: giving light, energy and cohesion to even the most eclectic collection.
Painting is a process that immediately involves collaboration of the subject and my own receptiveness. This practice becomes a collection of images and rhythms that leave a trail of responses to life experiences. My goal is to form a path that allows the viewer to enter in a way that unites our experiences without homogenizing our differences, so that there can be an open and clear space where there was none before. The work I make resists the spectacle and urges a greater importance for silence, ambiguity, and rest.
