KEVIN GUTHRIE: SELECTROCUTION NEW JANKS

Julia Martin Gallery / 444 Humphreys St. April 6 - 27th

Statement:

You know how when you engage in a war of words with a sibling, a coworker, or even a friend, and some time later you think of the perfect snappy comeback that would’ve ended that battle right then and there, but alas, it’s too late and it makes you feel even more defeated. I don’t know if there’s a word for that phenomenon or not, but it’s certainly the vibe of this series of new pieces I’ve put together.

There’s a cancelled comedian who I used to adore who often opened his set by immediately declaring, “and I’ll tell you something else.” I always thought that was brilliant and I knew what he meant. In this expo I’m going to revisit some of my earlier topics to add content and context to tidy things up a bit and there will be pieces that address subjects which I’ve never tangled with before. If these janks weren’t illustrations rendered on beer boxes I’d like to think they’d make a compelling rock opera on ice. So nice.

Cheers everybody!
