ELISE DRAKE: UTTERVERSE
Julia Martin Gallery / 444 Humphreys St. November 5, 2022 - November 26, 2022
Elise Drake
Human's earliest social technology is the desire to communicate through images, beads, and language. A long history of adornment with written language as signifier identification became mass-produced and commodified due to the invention of plastics in the early 1900s. Written language brings the intrapersonal language, what people think within their minds, into interpersonal connection and conversation. Elise Drake's newest series is an alphabetical playground of sculpted letters used to create authenticity, authority, and autonomy by enlarging childhood craft motifs using resins, tinted plasters and natural materials to relate in a socially inspired form and manner. The eye is forced to jump from block to block creating a rhythm to which viewers must apply their own cadence to access the collective contemplations in Drake's Utterverse.
