Nashville, TN | Painting, Mixed Media
Bio:
Lain York is a native of Nashville whose work continues to reference images from our collective sense of history.
Statement:
The latest images are automatic drawings of imagery I drag out of my personal unconscious and any sense of our collective unconscious. It is an exercise in uncovering timeless, primordial images that resonate with me and possibly any of us as we had them wiped from our collective hard drives when we were bounced onto this silly place of existence.
I feel my art-making practice (emphasis on practice) has been an indirect method of using sculptural and drawing strategies to make paintings.
Traditionally, I have used paint as a “patina” or methods usually associated with the making of “sculpture.” I rarely work with brushes and apply paint/color with my hands, spray it, sand/distress the surfaces, apply “correct tape,” and now working digitally.
I take this operation to mean tying myself into a collective conscience that goes below the surface of what I have been reading as cultural practices associated with a mosaic of individuated human communities and digging into its most basic expressions and engagement.
