ETSU Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries with support from Arts Build Communities of the Tennessee Arts Commission present We’re From Around Here: Appalachia Through Women’s Lens. Reception and artists’ talk with visiting photographer Pamela Pecchio on February 7, First Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tipton Gallery.

The exhibition, We’re From Around Here examines the rich and diverse culture and experiences of Appalachia through the lens of female photographers who live and or work in the region. Curated by Amber Dawn Farley and Katie Sheffield, We’re From Around Here showcases photographs that explore the importance of home and connection to place as visually narrated by women of Appalachia. Their work embraces tradition and creates contemporary narratives about the people and places of Appalachia today. The exhibition features contemporary Appalachia through photographic portraits by artists Ashleigh Coleman, Amanda Greene, Brittany Greeson, Sarah Hoskins, Tamara Reynolds and Pamela Pecchio.

Appalachia is a vast and diverse region spanning more than 206,000 square miles covering 423 counties across 13 states from Mississippi to New York. Although, the region is expansive and comprised of 26.4 million individuals residing alongside members of multiple Native American Tribal communities, the people of Appalachia have historically had negative stereotypes placed upon and the region has been associated with economic struggle. Despite this, the culture and region continue to be rooted in tradition, tied deeply to family, and is full of timeless natural beauty.

In partnership with the ETSU Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Women’s Resource Center and Sherrod Library. The exhibition runs from January 30 to February 8, 2025. Tipton Gallery is open for public viewing on Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m., with extended hours on receptions and by appointment. Supported by the Arts Build Communities (ABC) grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission through the First Tennessee Development District.
