ETSU Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries in collaboration with Mid-South Sculpture Alliance (MSA), Student Activities Allocation Committee (SAAC), Bravissima! Women Sponsoring the Arts! and East Tennessee Foundation’s Arts Fund present MSA Select: National Juried Sculpture Exhibition with Jurors’ &Artists Talk on October 25, 2022, Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. via ZOOM ID 710 908 4999; with in-person reception and gallery talk on November 10, Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the SLocumb Galleries, with guest of honor College of Arts & Sciences Dean Dr. Joe Bidwell.

Jurors Mike Barclay and Leticia Bajuyo explained their selection process as guided with the belief that “Sculpture has the unique ability to alter our perceptions through its use of shape, mass, and space to encourage observation and reflection on the world around us in new ways.” They added, “each artwork in this exhibition was selected for its creative insight and conceptual exploration communicated through refined craft and inventive use of materials,” thus “this diverse exhibition reflects the innovative, dynamic and outstanding work being created through a variety of materials, techniques, and content that represents the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance (MSA).”

Materials and process-driven approaches served as vital elements in the curatorial process, Barclay and Bajuyo assessed the artists manipulation of media as they witnessed “traditional materials such as ceramics, wood, iron, and steel have been molded, shaped, and altered by some artists to create new interpretations,” while “other artists have chosen to utilize new materials to bring creative playfulness to traditional forms and conceptual themes.” Through these artists’ works, a diversity of “techniques and approaches, from formal to process-driven and material transformations that bring attention to the ingenuity of this group” serve as survey of contemporary sculpture.
