MIKE SMITH: PARTING SHOTS

Reece Museum (ETSU) / 363 Stout Dr., Johnson City, TN January 3, 2017 - March 3, 2017

Mike Smith

Mike Smith, Professor of Art in ETSU's Department of Art and Design, will retire in May of 2017 after serving the university as its major professor in photography for thirty-six years. His exhibition at the B. Carrol Reece Museum, Parting Shots is a timely look at some of today's most divisive political, social and cultural topics photographed in his own backyard, or rather within 25 miles of it. The work is culled from over twelve thousand images made during the past four years and represents a significant shift visually, conceptually, and technically for Smith.

In 2011, Smith was awarded a United States Artists Lowe Fellowship; a $50,000 no-strings attached award given annually to 50 individuals in eleven disciplines. He used those funds to transition from analog to digital media and relearned his craft. Parting Shots is the first major exhibition of his work since receiving that award. A reception will be held on Thursday, January 26 from 5 to 7 pm. The Reece Museum is free and open to the public 9 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
