Exceptional Myth by Dawn Dickins

ETSU Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries present Exceptional Myths by artist Dawn Dickins from January 21 to February 14, 2025 at the Slocumb Galleries. Participatory ‘erasing of drawing’ performance with Artist’s talk during reception on February 13, Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. with Guest of Hoor Dr. Joe Bidwell, Dean, College of Arts & Sciences.

The Exceptional Myth is large scale drawings and graphite installation by Dawn Dickins. It explores the representation of the American Cowboy as a symbol of American Exceptionalism, the American Dream, and Individualism, involving active collective participation in challenging these myths.

Dawn Martin Dickins is a drawing/installation artist with imagery rooted in metaphor. She creates work in response to current political issues that affect her as a citizen, a woman and a mother. Though Dickins works in various scales, she prefers the performative nature of large-scale public works that allow viewers to experience its development. Dickins earned her BFA from Georgia Southern University and her MFA from the University of South Carolina. She currently lives and works in Clarksville, Tennessee.

The Exceptional Myth exhibition is in partnership with the Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies, Sherrod Library and Women’s Resource Center. Funding from the Arts Project Support Grant of the Tennessee Arts Commission and the ETSU SAAC Grant. A public drawing demo is scheduled on February 14, Friday from 10 am to 11:30am at the Slocumb Galleries.

The Slocumb Galleries are located at Ernest C. Ball Hall, 232 Sherrod Drive, ETSU campus, Johnson City, Tennessee. Viewing hours are weekdays from 9am to 5 p.m. with extended hours on receptions and by appointment.
