Sigrid Yu
The Department of Art and the Student Gallery at the E. Bronson Ingram Studio Arts Center is proud to present YUKE: A Journey & A Promise an exhibition from Sigrid Yu, a senior art major at Vanderbilt University.
This exhibition is a collaborative experience between the artist and her cousin, who is based in China. Yuke, her cousin, was born with congenital hearing loss, and received a cochlea implant in 2016 at the age of four before learning to speak. As way to express herself, Yuke has developed a love for art and demonstrated skills with modeling original characters in clay and shows exceptional perception of the nuances in her creative imagination. She began to make art as she gradually began to regain her hearing and learning to speak.
Sigrid, as a collaborator working with Yuke, handled the shipment of the clay figures from Sichuan, China to Nashville. She began constructing worlds the characters existed in based on Yuke's stories in boxes only viewable by peering through view ports allowing viewers a glimpse into her cousin's imagination.
This collaboration not only strengthened their relationship and created a special bond between the two.
