VICKI SHER: LIGHT OF DAY

The Red Arrow Gallery / 919 Gallatin Ave., #4 July 8, 2017 - August 6, 2017

Vicki Sher

Red Arrow Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new drawings by Brooklyn-based artist, Vicki Sher. Light of Day marks her first solo exhibition with Red Arrow Gallery and continues her exploration of space using color and shape. Artist reception and exhibition opening, on Saturday July 8th, 2017 at 6PM.

In this series of new work, Vicki Sher mines the border between indoor and outdoor space. In many of the drawings a window-like presence, in the form of a square or rectangle inserts itself in the picture- hovering, intruding, framing. Are we inside looking out or outside looking in? It’s one or the other but never entirely clear. Lively color and shapes drift between abstraction and representation, between the structural and organic, creating dance partners of the hand-made and natural worlds.

Space- around and about the image gives room for the viewer to breathe, fill in the gaps, and create a narrative. The air in the work, and a reduction of vocabulary, gives room for contemplation, while layers, and the translucency of the vellum like surface, provide a third dimension, and deeper space for this poetic absorption.

Vicki Sher has been making art and exhibiting throughout the United States for over two decades. She received her B.F.A. from the Cornell University, Ithaca, NY and her M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. She is the recipient of a 2014 MacDowell Colony Fellowship award, and a 2015 VCCA Fellowship award. She has participated in numerous art fairs, including VOLTA Basel, NADA, Pulse and Scope in New York and Miami. Sher’s work, using a variety of drawing and painting media as well as collage and video, stems from intuitive connections to line, color, and shape, but grounds itself in personal narratives, ideas about nature, human behavior and relationships.
