A name flattens out identity, subsumes the named under a banner, a radically simplified sign that can’t capture the sand-through-the-hand like quality of being. A name antagonizes the named. It always misses the individual, treating them like a cliché or a stereotype. To quote that hard to read, anti-namer, Derrida, “to give a name...is to sublimate a singularity and to inform against it, to hand it over to the police.” But in a world where identities are numbers and values, we can’t stay nameless. We are either given names or choose new ones. And this is where we came together, to briefly hold each other’s hands and create our small anti-institution institution, a tiny community of Christian apostates who can’t stop thinking about and longing for transcendence.
Our work uses abstraction as we’ve taken from the history of painting as a way to become silent. This has made our re-naming a sort of naming in the negative, while also a positive placeholder for a becoming name.
