‘Storytellers’ features painting, drawing, and mixed media construction with a strong narrative component. Subject matter ranges from familiar still life scenes by Ray Kleinlein, Bob Durham, and Jim Phalen to surreal scenarios in Marilyn Murphy's graphite drawings, Barry Buxkamper's painting within a painting and Ron Porter's dream-like spin on his truck series. The work reflects observation and irony, especially seen in Meg Aubrey's Suburban Landscape series work and Jeff Danley's female figures in tight spaces. Combining painting and mixed media with found objects, Caroline Waite presents one of her Linear Narrative wall constructions. Skilled composers of thought and form, each of these Southeast artists draws visual plots with gestures, allusions and decorum, capturing a single moment in a larger discourse. With each artist presenting at least one new piece, this exhibit offers a fresh look at some of Cumberland Gallery’s most revered storytellers.
