The Department of Art at Vanderbilt University is pleased to present Sightlines, a group exhibition of artworks by faculty teaching in the Department of Art + Design at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. This exhibition was co-organized and co-curated by Jonathan Rattner, Associate Professor of Cinema & Media Arts and Art at Vanderbilt University, and Virginia Griswold, Associate Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University.

Curators/Organizers Statement:
A sightline is an imaginary line between viewer/observer/spectators’ eyes and object. The term “line” presumes that light from an observed object travels as a straight ray. Yet, often the light observed travels at an angular path. Light is reflected, refracted, deflected. Subject and meaning are gathered by specific markers, targets, flags, and symbols.

As artists working in higher education, we teach and think about art next to each other, but often do not show or make work together. When curating this show, we were interested in the sightline. We were interested in the invisible web that connects the artists in this show. We wanted to explore how the work created by this collective of artists, who practice in different mediums, are concerned with different histories, and are guided by different questions, indirectly interacts with one another. We wondered if proximity could be a catalyst, bringing to light new insights and understandings of the works presented.
