SHABAZZ LARKIN: THIS IS HOW IT IS RIGHT NOW.
Julia Martin Gallery / 444 Humphreys St. November 1 - 29th (Reception: November 1 6:00pm - 9:00pm)
Shabazz Larkin
Shabazz Larkin’s new body of work will be a visual and poetic feast of photographs, paintings, poems, and collages. Some works are made in collaboration with his sons, Royal and Legend, giving the show a living, breathing sense of family, and time already vanishing.
The exhibition itself is a collage - both in concept and material. Larkin layers scraps of image, text, and memory to grapple with what cannot be held: the inevitability of change. Revolution, power, impermanence - none of it is stable. Everything is up for rearrangement.
Larkin’s practice grows out of meditation: art as presence, art as release. He cuts, paints, and assembles with the understanding that nothing stays fixed. What remains are offerings - questions in visual form - that ask the viewer not just to look, but to feel.
This is how it is right now refuses sentimentality. It stares down the fleeting, breaks it apart, and puts it back together. The result is part archive, part prayer, part wake-up call.
