Rocky Horton

Rocky Horton’s recent paintings featured in Homage and Hot Rods are a response to another work – Flowers in a Wooden Vessel by Jan Brueghel the Elder, which was created in 1606-07. Horton’s works are both an homage to this great painting and an expression of his desire to be vulnerable and moved by Brueghel’s piece – reconfiguring the original and creating kaleidoscopic, confrontational, and explosive compositions. Horton’s works are an act of admiration for a specific painting and for art history in general. Loving a vintage car may manifest itself in historical restoration. It may also be expressed through Hot-rodding, customizing and updating the original to suit current culture and new aesthetics. Both are acts of love and reverence. Similarly, the works in this exhibition are acts of restoration and customization. Like Horton’s previous works, this new series is indicative of the artist’s interest in taking emotional and romantic risks.
