RICHARD HEINSOHN: THE GHOST WE LIVE BY

Banker’s Alley Hotel / 221 2nd Avenue N. March 14 - August 1st

Richard Heinsohn

The Bankers Alley Hotel Nashville is thrilled to present a solo exhibition by Nashville-based artist Richard Heinsohn.

The Ghost We Live By is a multi-media visual art exhibition that examines deep time through the dual lenses of geology and abstract metaphor, providing insights into time, causation and consequence. Using video, photographs, wall reliefs, and mixed media paintings, this project invites viewers into an immersive and relational engagement with ideas of transformation through vast measures of time. Examining micro to macro proportions regarding both space and time, this showing of various works locates the human moment very much within the micro and promotes the consideration of this vulnerability as an expansion of human consciousness.

Heinsohn engages abstraction to create visual metaphors for perceptions of time in his expansive paintings while his photographic works of rocks under flowing water question the very definitions of abstraction and representation. His recent wall reliefs, combining non-biodegradable detritus with actual rocks, speak to the geological impact of humans on our planet. Central to the concept of transformation through time, his newest video, Water Time and Rocks (2026) anchors the show.

Heinsohn has become increasingly interested in philosophy and science in relation to the concept of time, a subject he has explored extensively. He states “Time is our most collectively utilized and functional metaphysical entity. It is a phantom omnipresence through which we must navigate. It is the measurement of process disguised as motion. Time is the ghost we live by.”
