RACE, SPORTS, AND VANDERBILT: 1966-1970

Fine Arts Gallery (Vanderbilt University) / 1220 21st Ave. S. September 23, 2016 - December 8, 2016

An exhibition tied to the Commons Reading, "Strong Inside: Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race and Sports in the South" by Andrew Maraniss, this exhibition looks at the story of the first integrated basketball team in the SEC and the early years of Vanderbilt's Impact Symposium, which focused on bringing controversial speakers of opposing views to campus. The exhibition is contextualized by front pages from The Tennessean and also incorporates material culture from the time and oral history interviews.
