Photography Comes First and Language Follows is an exhibition of eight women photographers from middle Tennessee. The works represents a group of photographers who have sustained a yearlong dialogue about photography, and this brings together their work for the first time.

The title of the show, from an essay by the Japanese photographer Shomei Tomatsu, captures a shared emphasis on the primacy of practice and the dialogue that has ensued. This show is as much about a conversation as it is about continuities in these artists’ work. Participants include: Rachel Boillot, Beth Gorham (whose work is pictured above), Stacy Kranitz, Vesna Pavlovic, Kristine Potter, Tamara Reynolds, Christine Rogers, Julia Steele. Robin Paris, faculty member at Watkins in photography and a member of the group, curated the show.

A closing reception will occur on September 27th from 6-8 p.m.
