PAZ SUAY: ANEW
COOP Gallery / 507 Hagan St. June 22 - 24th
Paz Suay
Anew begins with a return to the visual alphabet: line, form, rhythm, texture, contrast, and repetition.
Emerging from a period of pause and disconnection, the work reflects Suay’s search for a slower, more grounded way of making, guided by material, process, and attention. Rooted in Suay’s background in architecture, art education, and the Mediterranean landscape of Valencia, the exhibition brings together drawing, painting, collage, ceramics, paper, and wood. Chalky whites, slate blacks, clay reds, and earth tones evoke lime, sand, slate, clay, and the construction materials that shaped her early visual memory.
The works move between two connected modes of practice. Elementary Practice studies the foundations of form through restraint, repetition, and careful material decisions. Here, the work does not seek immediate emotion; it seeks coherence. Secondary Practice expands that language through scale, gesture, layering, and greater freedom. It is not a departure from Elementary, but its consequence: a freer movement through an absorbed method. Together, the two practices reveal a living system of containment and expansion — one built not from urgency, but from discipline, renewal, and accumulated attention. Anew marks the moment when an artist stops searching for a style and begins to inhabit a method: visual language emerges from what remains essential.
Drawing from her international experience, Suay extends the exhibition through bilingual, multidisciplinary programming that bridges Nashville’s Spanish-speaking and English-speaking communities. Bringing together visual art, performance, poetry, workshop, and dialogue, the pop-up expands the gallery format into a space for encounter, access, and meaningful exchange.
Anew is Suay’s first solo exhibition in Nashville and is supported in part by a Metro Arts Thrive Grant.
Suay will be present throughout the three-day pop-up.
