NATHANIEL COVINGTON: WEIRD THINGS

Modfellows Art Gallery / 3655 Trousdale Dr., Suite C October 2, 2021 - October 30, 2021

Nathaniel Covington

Nathaniel Covington is back with Weird Things, his third solo exhibition at Modfellows Gallery. His delightfully spooky papier-mâché sculptures and psychedelic monster paintings reference everything from sci-fi flicks to pop-art. These strange creatures, rendered in punchy colors and flat graphic outlines, seem to have sprung from Dr. Frankenstein's lab... had it been converted into a confectionery. In truth, they have all been living inside the mind of the artist, whose sense of irony and play recalls the kitsch of comic books and VHS covers for monster movies. Weird Things also notes a new direction in Covington’s work: merging his monster sculptures with other objects. The crackle of static emanates from the belly of a beast as it fuses itself around a portable television set. Across the gallery, an old-school gumball machine is poised to dispense eyeballs instead of twenty-five cent candies. This nostalgia gives Covington's work an easy appeal. Much like a prop fabricator on a movie set, he is self-taught and inventive in his creative process. His works begin as mere sketches on whatever available surface may be at hand, and resolve into two or three dimensional characters.

Covington and his rag-tag group of weird things will soon be inhabiting Modfellows Gallery, but not forever. The show closes with a bang the night before Halloween. This event is not to be missed, as they’re all dying to meet you.
