Artist Todd Saal’s Telling Stories is an exhibition of watercolor on paper that captures the moment and mood of a person or place. His works push the limits of the medium, creating a push and pull with the way he expresses himself through the materials. Saal realized long ago that watercolor can never be completely controlled. So, he relaxed and simply allowed his creative process to happen. He enjoys above all sketching people as they go through their everyday lives. It’s an approach that invites the viewer to see themselves in the art, to tell their own stories, if you will.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in New York City, Todd Saal always had a passion for art. He spent much of his adult life making a living in the tech industry. But he never lost touch with his creative side. So, during his many travels, he continued to sketch the places and people he observed. Immersing himself in the study of watercolor, he quickly realized that watercolor was not a medium that could be completely controlled. Giving in to the unconstrained nature of this medium is what he has come to love most. His paintings are mostly en plein air, conveying visual stories of the places and people he observes. Now residing in Middle Tennessee, Saal is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist and Tennessee Watercolor Societies, with formal training in pastels, oil and sculpture.
“I like to think of watercolor as my partner, each of us having our own voice in every painting. It does its own thing and continues to work long after the guidance of my initial brush strokes. Taking advantage of painting plein air in the studio
Thursday, November 16, 5 to 7 PM
Todd discusses the approaches to the subjects he works on in the studio from the lessons learned painting outdoors. He'll lead an open discussion of the importance of painting from life. As well as the gear he uses. From the most basic to the custom setup he travels with.
