COOP Gallery is pleased to present Locational Shift by our new members, Lisa Bachman Jones, Beth Reitmeyer, Yanira Vissepo, and Quintin Watkins.
COOP’s exhibition space has shifted location; the pandemic and societal instability cause us to shift not only physical locations but conceptual ones. These five artists represent a cross-section of how Nashville’s visual artists are navigating our unsettled world.
Lisa Bachman Jones is a visual artist interested in precarity, entropy, and interconnectivity. Working across disciplines, Jones investigates the everyday through a lens of care. She looks at how the permanence of things shifts over time, whether considering a vow, a slab of cement or a collective common sense. By asking questions as a means of tending to, Jones stays attentive to when the constructed begins to seem natural. Jones is a recent MFA graduate from Watkins College of Art at Belmont University.
Beth Reitmeyer is a visual artist who likes to make people happy with her colorful installations. She attended Northwestern University (MFA in Art Theory and Practice). Her artwork strives to be a physical manifestation of the cherished yet unseen parts of our relationships: hopes, dreams, wishes, loss, and love. It fosters relationships between people who may or may not otherwise meet, allowing them to spend time making memories and building friendships in specific places of one’s life.
Yanira Vissepo is a multi-disciplinary artist focusing on printmaking and textile art; her woodblock designs reflect time studying traditional techniques in Japan. Vissepo merges traditional with new utilizing mokuhanga as the translator. Yanira has worked with various mediums implementing printmaking, including free form tapestries, block printed textiles, soft sculptures, as well as works on paper. She attended The International School of Mokuhanga in 2019 and was the Artist-in-Residence at Coop Gallery in 2020. In 2021 Yanira taught block printing classes to adults and teenagers at Frist Art Museum and The Nashville Public Library.
Quintin Watkins is a creative from Atlanta, GA. He earned a BFA in Graphic Design from Austin Peay University in 2016. His current works are primarily created through digital applications and explore concepts of altered realities, character designs based from video games and loose expectations. The body of work presented, Don’t Be Afraid, is framed in the narrative of consequences of perspectives within the unsure mind and the fears that reverb. He is also venturing into disrupting color theory norms and expanding concepts of color language.
