LAUREN TAYLOR: HOW DEEP IS DOWN?
Neue Welt / 507 Hagan St. January 4 - February 23rd
Lauren Taylor
Neue Welt is pleased to present How deep is down?, an exploration of loss, grief, and the things we leave behind, by Nashville-based artist Lauren Taylor.
How is the passage of time measured in making? Can wholeness be found in the void of absence? Taylor continues her practice of manipulating found and collected imagery, clothing, and miscellaneous objects found in her home, studio, and garden. After the recent passing of her father, Taylor moves towards her grief and explores how it has affected her practice and ability to make work.
The show is a homecoming for Taylor, who previously showed work in the space when mild climate occupied it back in 2017. The show will be exhibited in two parts, a “double feature creature,” across January and February openings.
SIDE A
A massive tree that grew in the backyard of my childhood home blew down in a storm. A shaded garden for the last twenty-or-so years became a full sun garden overnight. My brother spent an afternoon helping my dad dig up tree roots. After a few hours of digging and sifting earth, they decided to call it a day. Unsure if the garden bed had been cleared of tree roots entirely, my brother asked if they should keep going– Had they dug deep enough? My dad looked at him and said, “Life is too short.”

So many songs about the deepness of love and the ocean, but none about the depth of down.
