The Lighthouse: Ky Anderson

My paintings and works on paper tell moments of an internal story. Each painting stands as evidence of the search, exploration and endless possibilities of shape, line and color which feed the conversation until a balance has been found. While primarily abstract, my paintings are atmospheric yet structural with a hint of familiarity. They illustrate the visible and invisible connections between the weights, pulls and supports of the sculptural and symbolic landscape around us. I interact intuitively with color and make my own paint so I can achieve the exact hue, transparency, thickness and sheen that I want. Thinning down my paint so that the history of layers are visible is a vital part of my process. Like seeing the clouds when looking through the leaves of trees, the layers give my work space and depth.

Anderson’s paintings and works on paper have been exhibited all over the US, Canada and Europe in solo, group shows and art fairs, with recent solo exhibitions at Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco, CA, Matteawan Gallery in Beacon, NY and Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art in Kansas City, MO. She is a founding member of PAPER GIANTS, an art collective with an exhibition record of showing large scale works on paper. Her work has been shown at public institutions including Weatherspoon Art Museum, The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and Moore College of Art. She is represented by Kathryn Markel Fine Arts (NY, New York), Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art (Kansas City, MO), Jack Fischer Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Zeitgeist (Nashville, TN) and Republic Gallery (Vancouver, CA).  Anderson was born and raised in Kansas City, MO and received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. Anderson lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Bedfellows: Vadis Turner

In this new body of work, Turner created a series of rounded sculptures and wall reliefs from braided bedsheets and other domestic textiles. Many of the works come in pairs and explore the duality of related elements.

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Turner received a BFA and MFA from Boston University and has exhibited her work internationally. Selected exhibitions include the Brooklyn Museum, New York; National Gallery, Prague and Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, 21C Museum, Tennessee State Museum, Kentucky Arts and Crafts Museum and the Egon Schiele Art Centrum.

In 2016 Turner was awarded the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant. She had her first solo museum exhibition at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in 2017 and has a two-person museum show at the Carnegie Center for Art & History through December 1, 2018.

She is represented by Geary Contemporary in NYC and Zeitgeist Gallery in Nashville
