KAREN SEAPKER + LINDA LOPEZ: TURN, TURN, TURN

The Red Arrow Gallery / 919 Gallatin Ave. September 7 - 28th

Linda Lopez, Karen Seapker

Red Arrow is honored to present, Turn, Turn, Turn, a two-person show featuring the work of Linda Lopez and Karen Seapker. Inspired by Pete Seeger's song, the title suggests a time for change and ends with a plea for peace: “a time for peace, I swear it’s not too late.” It also evokes the medieval rota fortunae, or wheel of fortune, symbolizing the capricious nature of fate and the recurring blessings and losses in life. The concept of turning—shaping, illuminating, and casting shadows—permeates the works in this summer 2024 exhibition, a period marked by its own highs, lows, and turbulence.

Linda Lopez’s new series of dust furries delves into the essence of summer’s long days, capturing moments where color and shape converge to create windows into another world. By expanding abstracted negative spaces with pigmented porcelain, she transforms them into biomorphic shapes that gather summer debris such as stones, raindrops/tears, and flora. These tender and magical forms, flat on one side, evoke a pause; yet beyond this illusion of calm, they disrupt space and reveal deeper nuances.

Karen Seapker will feature new paintings that contemplate the complexity of change in the context of the artist’s garden, which has showcased various overlapping states of transformation in this season of abundance. The paintings explore grief, complicity, connection, and community and were made while reading Octavia Butler, listening to political podcasts, and taking occasional breaks walking through the ever (overly?) generous garden during the dog days of summer.
