JULIA MARTIN + BROOKE GILLON: MY HEART'S DESIRE
Julia Martin Gallery / 444 Humphreys St. December 6 - 31st (Reception: December 6 6:00pm - 9:00pm)
Julia Martin, Brooke Gillon
I’ve been working my tail off to bring you as much new work as possible on December 6th, and I am so pleased to announce that i will be accompanied by one of my favorite ceramicists & oldest friends, Brooke Gillon, who’s been working in collaboration with her mystical son Jack, whose hand carved spoons are right out of a Tolkien novel.
(All these parent/child collaborations lately are so incredible. I think i see a whole exhibition in JMG’s future… do you know some creative family duo’s?)
"My heart’s desire" is a phrase that has been taunting and haunting me quite a bit this past year. Feeling as though I could not name a big picture goal, wish or desire, and instead, locked in feeling like my life and livelihood were getting jackhammered into oblivion by “progress”- has all been quite unnerving.
The anxiety and fear around these concerns became a smoke screen between my life and forward momentum, leaving me complacent and vulnerable to a mindset of doom (which is far too easy to access these days).
The simple act of beginning a tiny little wish journal has cracked me wide open, along with taking the time to name little things all around me that i already love and appreciate. These practices put me back in touch with freedom, particularly in the studio. Hell, the simple fact that i have a studio at all these days is a massive desire fulfilled. Deeply grateful to the DPC (Downtown Presbyterian Church).
Leaning into faith, instead of clutching onto fear/emotional paralysis… clears the smoke screen. Call it prayer, meditation, intention setting, spell casting…. just make sure you nurture it. These works are all filled with this energy of Abundance & Love and i hope you enjoy them immensely.
