JODI HAYS: A COLLECTION OF KNOWNS

Sauvage Galerie / 1114B 3rd Ave. S. March 11, 2017 - March 18, 2017

Jodi Hays

For the March Et Al. Poetry Reading in Nashville, TN, Sauvage Galerie is extremely excited to host three brilliant poets, and one incredible visual artist. A Collection of Knowns is a pop-up show comprised of an entire year's worth of the unseen pieces from Nashville visual artist Jodi Hays.

Through my work I have long considered notions of restraint and abandon through slippage of abstraction and image. In this recent series I made through 2016, I scaled the work modestly (16” x 12”), referencing my body and access to the viewer. I consider the grid as a formal structure related to representations of fences and walls, and what happens when the grid fails, patterns break, neighbors mend fences. (- Jodi Hays)

Jodi Hays is the recipient of the Individual Artist Fellowship from the Tennessee Arts Commission, an Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation grant and her works are included in collections of the J. Crew Company (NY), Nashville International Airport, Gordon College (MA), and the Tennessee State Museum. Residencies include The National Parks of America, The Cooper Union School of Art, and Vermont Studio Center. She received her M.F.A from Vermont College, her B.F.A. from The University of Tennessee and studied Foundations at School of Visual Arts (SVA). After having lived and worked in Boston where she was Assistant Director at the Cambridge Art Association, she moved to East Nashville in 2005 where she maintains a studio and pop-up gallery (DADU). Her practice includes work with COOP Gallery (a Nashville-based curatorial collective for which she was a founding member) and teaching.
