JACK HASTINGS + ARLYN ENDE: THE ESSENCE OF THEIR TICKING
Tinney Contemporary / 237 Rep. John Lewis Way, N. December 3, 2022 - January 7, 2023
Jack Hastings, Arlyn Ende
Jack Hastings and Arlyn Ende left behind two brilliant and inextricable bodies of work which, taken together, provide an invitation into their world. Side by side, they built a life predicated on self-sufficiency and creativity. The couple’s playful color palette and kaleidoscopic geometry manifested in a yin-yang of complementary and opposite mediums: Jack favoring the cold precision of concrete and metal, Arlyn delving into the warmth of textiles and rug hooking. Both multidisciplinarians in their own right, they collaborated on corporate commissions, started their own clothing line, curated and operated multiple galleries, and worked to promote the arts in whatever community they found themselves in.
The title of the exhibition is a slight alteration of The Essence of Our Ticking, Jack and Arlyn's seminal exhibition at the gallery in 2012 which was named after one of Jack’s poems. The works are a lasting monument to the brilliance of Jack and Arlyn; a snapshot into the creative minds of two artists whose spirit touched so many. In honor of the consecrated creative space they carved out, their Sewanee homestead and workspace, Deepwoods Studio, will be preserved as an artist’s retreat in affiliation with Tinney Contemporary.
