J. ALEX SCHECHTER: NODE FOR CIRCLE OF PROTECTION (WHITE)

COOP Gallery / 507 Hagan St. March 1 - 31st

J. Alex Schechter

Neue Welt is pleased to present Node for Circle of Protection (White) by Greenville, SC-based artist J. Alex Schechter at the gallery's offsite location in rural Williamson County, Tennessee, in parallel with the current gallery show, J. Alex Schechter and Sean M. Starowitz: Terra Magia.

Circle of Protection (White) is an ongoing project between Schechter and a growing series of collaborators. Working with artists, architects, and scientists, Circle of Protection (White) has produced a series of functional bat houses. These structures, designed to meet the roosting specifications of bat species endemic to the area where they are installed, work to both build functional habitats for bats as well as symbolic wards against White Nose Syndrome, a parasitic fungus currently decimating bat populations across the continental U.S.

J. Alex Schechter is a sculptor based in Greenville, SC. He holds a BA in Religious Studies from Grinnell College and an MFA in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include Flux Factory (New York, NY), Peep Projects (Philadelphia, PA), Terrault Contemporary (Baltimore, MD), Millersville University (Millersville, PA), and the Neon Heater (Findlay, OH). Schechter is an Assistant Professor of Art at Clemson University.
