Artist Statement:

In the summer of 2019 I was on my way to a July 4th party when I heard a song on the radio that instantly grabbed my attention and lit a fire in the creative part of my soul that had been quiet for a long time. I felt a strong impulse to create something and I stumbled upon alcohol ink as a medium. This medium allows me to express, in the abstract, how it feels to listen to music, work in the garden, watch a film, or play with a dog. The pieces in this show are the reverberations of my everyday inspiration.

The process of using alcohol ink involves dropping the ink onto a surface and then using isopropyl alcohol to move the ink using breath or a heat source, like a hair dryer. With practice an artist can learn how to influence the ink, but it can never truly be controlled. I start each piece with an intention, and I remain open to allowing the ink to go where it will go. Often the result is surprising. The beauty of alcohol ink is you can go back to a piece reimagine it using more alcohol and ink. All pieces are on reused and repurposed substrates, which means they have imperfections that are part of the piece.

TGCR is a part of the WeHo Arts Nashville first Saturday Art Crawl circuit.
