HATCH SHOW PRINT EXHIBIT

Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Gallery (Watkins College) / 2298 Rosa L Parks Blvd. September 12, 2019 - October 10, 2019

Lordy, lordy, look whose 140! Each year, Celene Aubry and the talented staff at Hatch Show Print graciously welcome a group of students from Watkins’s graphic design and illustration departments to spend the day working in the historic print shop. During this year’s workshop, students and faculty designed typographic posters that celebrated Hatch’s 140th birthday. By maintaining a focus on preservation through production, Hatch Show Print, a working letterpress print shop since 1879 (just six years younger than Watkins), uses its collection to create iconic designs that express and pay tribute to a unique segment of America’s cultural identity. The students were challenged to use Hatch’s landmark collection of typefaces, along with its traditional letterpress methods, to create posters that paid tribute to the Hatch aesthetic, as well as the shop’s longevity. Posters from the workshop will be on view in the Brownlee O.Currey, Jr. Gallery located on the Watkins campus. The show’s opening reception is on Thursday, September 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
