GOOD GRIEF

Julia Martin Gallery / 444 Humphreys St. November 7 - 27th (Reception: November 7 5:00pm - 9:00pm)

This November, around 15 of my fellow artists and I will share work exploring a theme the whole of humanity is familiar with. These days, we are faced with it far more than can possibly be healthy. Personally I find myself compartmentalizing, rationalizing, wallowing and on occasion, even celebrating it. Grief is universal and complex. It is our companion, whether we welcome it or not.

It is my belief that artists are accessing, and therefore processing, grief with more regularity than most. In fact, it would not surprise me if any work, chosen at random, in anyone's catalog, could not be contextualized to illustrate how that artist has navigated their own grief. The act of creating is the most powerful tool we possess to change our pain.

I have asked each of these brilliant artists, to share work they feel fits this bill. My hope is that, in sharing these works, we will come together and partake in the opportunity to befriend grief, get to know it, help each other carry it, use it, sit with it, or maybe release it. There is so much beauty in and around all these avenues. Art and community have the ability to highlight it... These are the offerings of this exhibition.
