Janet Decker Yanez, Hans Schmitt-Matzen, Mel Beall, Richard Feaster, Sarah Hart-Landolt, Shevy Smith

The Browsing Room, in collaboration with The Contributor, is pleased to announce Disposables (and Poetry), a two-month exhibition showcasing the dynamic interplay of art, disposability, and poetry.

This group exhibition features a captivating array of works from the Downtown Presbyterian Artists-in-Residence program. Janet Decker Yanez presents pieces from her Do Mess series, a mixed media creation using emptied tissue boxes and toiletry containers as foundation for paint and fleeting identity explorations.

Celebrating the poetry of paint, line and light, Richard Feaster contributes two vibrant mixed media on canvas works: Impropulsion and The Light of Other Days. Hans Schmitt-Matzen shares an innovative acrylic paint-on-sculpture compound over plywood piece entitled “Signifier.”

Shevy Smith's "Warm Nature," a lighting element made of clay, EL wire, and amber acrylic, alongside Sarah Hart Landolt’s ink impressions, add depth to the exhibition. Additionally, photos taken by Contributor vendors using disposable cameras will be displayed in the DPC Fellowship Hall alongside original framed poetry. Both are available for sale and aim to highlight the experiences and creative expressions of Nashville's unhoused population.

Disposables (and Poetry) invites visitors to reconsider elements often seen as disposable. From paint cans to unconventional materials like deer antlers, each piece offers a fresh perspective on what society deems ephemeral and enduring. This exhibition not only celebrates creativity and resilience but also provides a poignant commentary on the state of living as a creative in Nashville in 2024.
