Neue Welt is pleased to present Facing Snow, an exhibition composed of four multi-color lithographs, with the addition of one painting, by Lexington, Kentucky-based artist Dianna Settles. The prints were executed by Settles herself, originally trained as a stone lithographer despite being best known currently as a painter, on her 1843 Robert Mayer Parks Press. Created over the last three months in isolated, irregular hours stolen away from childcare, community organizing, and the artist's existing studio practice, these works provide a glimpse into the material, psychological, and emotional challenges of raising children in a world that feels more hostile towards life and joy with each passing day.

The title of the exhibition is borrowed from a poem by Du Fu, a Chinese poet born in 712, whose life was interrupted and irrevocably shaped by the An Lushan Rebellion, an apocalyptic civil war in which over two thirds of the Chinese population was killed or displaced. In translation by Wong May, the poem begins:

In wartime one weeps for new ghosts

& the many more yet to come

One shall weep with.
