CHRIS UPHUES + DEVIN GOEBELV: LIKE MOONLIGHT ON A YELLOW FERRARI
Julia Martin Gallery / 444 Humphreys St. November 4 - 25th (Reception: November 4 6:00pm - 9:00pm)
Chris Uphues, Devin Goebel
Through experimental drawings, paintings, and mixed media, Chris Uphues and Devin Goebel respectively create space for imaginations to run wild with new associations and context for pop culture emblems.
Chris Uphues is inspired by commercial advertising, cartoons, comics, and pop art. Inside his world of “incidental graphics” - smiley faces, hearts, flowers, rockets… pencils - are pop references democratized and made joyful using crisp lines and vibrant color choices.
Devin Goebel has made a name for himself by highlighting and manipulating overlooked everyday objects through medium and depiction, making the mundane magnificent. He pulls inspiration from dive bar décor, nightclubs, the real housewives, and pop stars. Goebel describes his works as, “feeling like pop songs,” filled with campy luxury items presented as religious iconography. But, he remarks, “it’s not that serious.”
