CAITLIN ACKERMAN: REFLECTIONS OF LOVE

WAG (Watkins Art Gallery) / 507 Hagan St. October 5, 2019 - November 1, 2019

Caitlin Ackerman

Opening the October Art Crawl at WAG will be Caitlin Ackerman’s show, Reflections of Love. The show presents a journey of self-discovery through the undefinable and subjective language of photography. Ackerman says she has always been “awed by the photographs of wives made by well-known photographers, such as Emmet Gowin, Alfred Stieglitz, and Harry Callahan, who seemed to capture in them a deep love for these women, a love I have never felt for myself.” Through the deconstruction of these photographs and her own self-portraiture, Ackerman says the work “places her in both the mental space of these loving men and their trusting wives. To photograph much as they did is to understand their ways of seeing and to understand what it is to be a woman who is looked at with sincere love.” The project, she adds, changed the way she began to see and treat herself. “I began to heal and love from within.”

Ackerman is currently a senior in the photography BFA program at Watkins.
