ANNIE BRITO HODGIN: BEG FOR A SIGN

The Red Arrow Gallery / 919 Gallatin Ave. , Suite #4 November 2 - 30th

Annie Brito Hodgin

Red Arrow is pleased to present: Beg for a Sign, the second solo presentation with Tennessee based artist Annie Brito Hodgin, opening on Saturday November 2, 2024. Beg for a Sign is an exhibition of figurative oil paintings, exploring ideas of truth seeking through biblical references.

The depiction of biblical retellings through painting is one of Western art’s oldest artistic traditions. Hodgin’s paintings contribute to this legacy through the exploration of specific Old Testament Bible verses within each piece. Her interpretations of these verses within her paintings offer a personal and contemporary spin on classic narratives. The female figures within Hodgin’s works are bold and unabashed; they exist as characters enacting these biblical and mythological roles.

"A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas." Matthew 16: 4a

“These paintings are rooted in the desperation of a seeker terrified by the prospect of no answer. In an oversaturated, beautiful, and monstrous world, each protagonist enacts an Old Testament event in a tableau apparently void of the supernatural.”

Hodgin's work is a meditative exploration of trauma, ambiguity, absurdity, repression, and control. She considers her figures avatars for exploring these realities and the tensions they create. Influenced by a love for certain medieval and early Renaissance European artistic conventions, Hodgin draws a loose symbolism from literary and mythical references, memories, and the subconscious. These are often rooted in her upbringing as a fundamentalist Baptist.
