VANILLA EXTRACT, VOLUME TWO: FAIRLY VAIN AND/OR VANITY FAIR
Crosstown Arts 430 / 430 N. Cleveland St. June 14, 2016 - June 19, 2016
Lester Julian Merriweather
The Vanilla Extract© Series was established in 2002 as a catalyst for examining the infrastructural practices of racial representation by print media corporations. As found images are collected, they are then altered with the removal of Caucasian people. This practice works to illustrate the vast disparity in the visual representation of People of Color & highlights the notions created by systemic racism as practiced by print media corporations. The Vanilla Extract© Series works to visually define the endemic nature of racial bias.
“Vanilla Extract, Volume Two: Fairly Vain and/or Vanity Fair” chronologically marks the fourth installment of The Vanilla Extract© Series. Volume Two is centralized around the front covers of Vanity Fair Magazine from 2006-2013.
"Vanilla Extract, Volume Two: Fairly Vain and/or Vanity Fair" will be on view to the public 14-19 June 2016. The artist will hold a discussion/artist talk on Wednesday June 15th at 6p. A reception event will take place on Friday June 17th from 6-9p.
