My method of painting is like going on a trip. I start with a map (sketch). Along the way I see interesting side trips that must be explored. My final destination is always unexpected and much more exciting than originally anticipated. I never get bored with the journey, but it requires that I be willing to sacrifice my original plan and trust the muse. There are recurring themes in my work, both conscious and unconscious: the landscape composition, love of color, the search for hope, and forces that are greater than ourselves. - Pam Hassler
