MELISSA DUNN: LOVE SONG

L Ross Gallery / 5040 Sanderlin Ave., Ste. 104 March 1, 2017 - March 31, 2017

Melissa Dunn

L Ross Gallery is pleased to present Love Song, a solo exhibition of new work by Melissa Dunn. The show features abstract paintings that consider how geometric forms occupy space. The building blocks of each painting are drawings, both observational and imaginative, noticing shape variation in particular. These drawings range from tidbits and scraps in sketchbooks to elaborate renderings, all of which eventually become fair game for source material. Translating these ideas into a painting, Dunn executes them again by way of the muscle memory of repeated drawing alongside experimentation. The drawing process itself unifies her diverse body of work. In thinking about the kinship of varied visual experiences, Dunn hopes that in these unstable and divided times, empathy and connection are possible. The title "Love Song" speaks to the idea that art which has no apparent meaning or narrative can in some way connect us and contribute to a greater good.

Melissa Dunn lives in Memphis and teaches at Flicker Street Studio. She has served ArtsMemphis and Carpenter Art Garden doing arts advocacy work.
