"In May 2016, I received an email congratulating me on my acceptance into the Kala Art Institute’s Artist-in-Residency Program in Berkeley, California. During my stay out West, I worked on In Nocturne, which is an ongoing series of nocturnal photography. In this work, I follow a particular sleeping pattern in which my sleep is divided into two segments with a wakeful period of two to three hours in between. During that segment, I explore and exploit a seemingly foreign world around me as a fulfillment of my desires for peace and solitude. During the Nocturne, I take photos of (often) isolated buildings in which I feel a certain draw and connection to my feelings of serenity and solitude during those times of the night.

My search for peace, clarity, and space during this adventure was found in ways and moments far beyond what I imagined. The memories I made with my friends and family, who I am fortunate to have out there beyond explanation, still flood my mind, and instill within me a home-like comfort that I have never felt before." -Max
