BECOMING MORE MYSELF: RECLAMATION THROUGH TATTOO ART

Art Museum of the University of Memphis (AMUM) / 3750 Norriswood April 6 - 8th

The next exhibition Becoming More Myself: Reclamation through Tattoo Art presents visual and narrative representations of body and identity reclamation through tattoo art. Co-curators Vanessa Waites, a professional tattoo artist who holds MA in anthropology from the U of M and Caroline Warner, a current MA anthropology student, collaborated with photographer and U of M alum Emma (Chuck) Wilson to interview and photograph 18 volunteer participants whose stories explore gender, body image, trauma, and ways in which bodies can become spaces for achieving physical, psychological and social transformation and self-acceptance. The exhibition also explores changing perspectives on tattoos and their acceptability in contemporary culture in relation to social norms of beauty, gender and self-image.
