David Lusk Gallery Memphis / 97 Tillman St. April 9 - May 4th
David Lusk Gallery Memphis presents Joyce Gingold's A Lifestyle.
A Lifestyle is an exhibition of Gingold’s figures in porcelain and in bronze. The exhibit also features a glimpse into Gingold’s long life and career, which is noteworthy for its eight decades and unique characteristics. The figures share space with her striking outfits, collections and personality which shed light on her work habits and influences.
Gingold works her small sculptures by hand until they are ready to be kiln-fired and highly burnished to natural cream colors or lustrous black. Her subjects are most often semi-abstract nude female torsos with slight, yet distinct, fluidity. Gingold notes the importance of the nuances—lines, shadows and colors of life.
Her work, at once austere and sculptural, is powerful in its simplicity and possesses a quiet elegance that is both modern and reminiscent of antiquity. Using porcelain, Gingold has taken her own advice to heart: “Find your medium. Find your most particular interest and don’t give it up, the thing you enjoy most.”
