A Larger Circle
Curated by Lacy Mitcham Veteto & Toni Collums Roberts
Presented by Soul Owner, March 7 - April 3, 2020
Reception: April 3 6:00pm-8:00pm

MEMPHIS, TN—Soul Owner will host A Larger Circle, March 7 to April 3 with a closing reception on Friday, April 3 from 6PM to 8PM at the gallery located at 579 N. McLean Blvd. Curated by Lacy Mitcham Veteto and Toni Collums Roberts, A Larger Circle features 18 adjunct art professors on faculty during the Fall 2019 semester, from higher learning institutions throughout the greater Memphis area.

Named from a quote by Dr. Pauli Murray, “When my brothers draw a circle to exclude me, I shall draw a larger circle to include them,” A Larger Circle connects the presenting artists through their passions for both teaching and creating. These teaching artists come from multiple campuses, artistic disciplines, and stages in their art careers. A Larger Circle is about bringing them together, while shedding light on adjunct faculty trends in today’s higher-learning institutions.

Although adjunct professors often make up half or more of their respective fine arts faculty bodies, they are usually excluded from faculty exhibitions and often not acknowledged by their institutions for their research. Along with maintaining competitive studio practices, they are also deeply dedicated to their students. Usually working more than one job, sometimes at different learning institutions, and working with fewer resource opportunities from their institutions, these artists still find time to pursue their studio practice and produce work with high standards. As adjunct faculty themselves, curators Roberts and Mitcham Veteto created this show in solidarity to celebrate adjuncts' work, and to show that Memphis institutions of higher education are not immune to national statistics concerning adjunct presence, pay, benefits, recognition, and impact.

The gallery is open Saturdays 11AM-2PM and Wednesdays 4PM-6PM.
