RISA HRICOVSKY: PARLOR

The Central Collective / 923 N. Central St. September 6, 2019 - September 27, 2019

Risa Hricovsky

Parlor is an exhibition which employs hyperrealism and surrealism through the use of simulacrums. Porcelain is used to represent rugs, plants and flowers, where the ceramic objects are juxtaposed with actual examples of the parodies; pipe cleaners become a structural material to create furniture. Fragility and impermanence are contrasted with their porcelain opposites, and furniture which is reliable and sturdy is cast as comparatively light and insubstantial, though just as ecologically permanent. The immersive exhibition uses uncanny mimicry ask how one understands what is real, and to question ideological perceptions of materiality.

Risa Hricovsky is a post-discipline/installation artist. Her work pushes boundaries between painting and sculpture, and between art, design and craft. Risa received a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from Bowling Green State University. Risa has exhibited nationally and internationally and she has attended many prestigious residencies. Most notable residencies are The Studios at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA, Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Skealskor, Denmark and SIM in Reykjavik, Iceland.
