PETER PRECOURT: ROLLER COASTER - EXCERPTS FROM THE KATRINA CHRONICLES

Hamilton Center for the Arts (Lincoln Memorial University) / 703 Brooklyn St., Cumberland Gap, TN August 15, 2018 - September 21, 2018

Peter Precourt

Lincoln Memorial University's School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences would like to invite you to a reception being hosted by the LMU Art Program for Peter Precourt's exhibition Roller coaster: Excerpts from the Katrina Chronicles at the Cumberland Gap Arts Center on Thursday August 16, from 5-7pm. There will be a short artist gallery talk at 6pm.

With this body of work, Precourt explores the devastation he and his family personally experienced at the hands of 2005's Hurricane Katrina. This body of work looks to contextualize the history of the storm as it specifically affected Mississippi and its gulf coast. He finds in the storm (and its coverage) a familiar narrative of ignoring the plight of Mississippi, a state often looked down upon if looked upon at all. Through the use of text and image and a mixture of drawing materials Precourt takes us into the destroyed landscape that was Mississippi in the aftermath of the storm. The artist seeks to find his place in the world post-Katrina and how it affected (or didn't) the American recognition of the continuing struggles of one our most vulnerable places.

The exhibition runs from August 15-Septemer 21 at the LMU Center for the Arts. The LMU Center for the Arts houses the Art Program at LMU and is nestled in the historic town of Cumberland Gap, TN. The Art Program and the Gallery at the Arts Center strives to bring cutting edge contemporary art from local and regional artists to the LMU community. We aim to foster conversation about the place of visual arts and how they impact the diverse community of Appalachia in the 21st Century. The Cumberland Gap Arts Center is located at 703 Brooklyn St. in Cumberland Gap and is open Monday through Friday from 10am-3pm.
