Gallery 1010 presents Pothos featuring recent oil paintings by Marla Sweitzer.  The paintings are informed by the repeated act of observing a golden pothos. Working in black monochrome, Sweitzer responds to the subtle interactions of light and shadow in the gathering of dense leaves of the plant. Rather than having a strict separation of light and dark, there is a low visibility in the works, where leaf shapes merge into one another.

Marla Sweitzer (b. 1989 Sarasota, FL) is a first year MFA candidate in painting and drawing at the University of Tennessee. Sweitzer received her BA in studio art from Centre College in 2011. She attended the Jerusalem Studio School’s master class in Civita Castellana, Italy in 2013, where she studied landscape painting with Israel Hershberg. In 2016 Sweitzer was a visiting artist with the Artist Immersion Program in Torre Alfina, Italy. www.marlasweitzer.com
