MARLA SWEITZER: PAINTINGS

Fluorescent Gallery / 627 N. Central St. September 7, 2018 - September 28, 2018

Marla Sweitzer

In Paintings, Sweitzer explores oil painting in atmospheres of color. The compositions explore touch and an interplay of transparency and opacity of oil paint. The paintings vary in material presence: loose linen with frayed edges, raw linen acting as a frame, and cropped linen adhered to panels that float on the wall.  The edges of the paintings provide a structure to the amorphous fields at the center. Sweitzer works towards paintings where the physical reality of oil paint on linen transcends into a perceptual experience for the viewer.

Marla Sweitzer (b. 1989 Sarasota, FL) is a second year MFA candidate in painting and drawing at the University of Tennessee. Sweitzer received her BA in studio art from Centre College in 2011. She attended the Jerusalem Studio School’s master class in Civita Castellana, Italy in 2013 and was a visiting artist with the Artist Immersion Program in Torre Alfina, Italy in 2016. Materials for the paintings in the exhibit were generously funded by the Dorthy Dille Materials Grant.
