JONATHAN GONZÁLEZ: NEW NATIVES

Loghaven Artist Residency / 1001 Loghaven Dr. September 30, 2021 - October 1, 2021

Jonathan González

Please join us for an impromptu choreographic happening outdoors at Loghaven with artist in residence Jonathan González. This movement sculpture will take place in the driveway during three 45-min intervals with 15-min breaks from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Thursday, September 29.

Jonathan will be deconstructing some of the larger choreographic questions they have been working on into improvisational languages responding to the passing commuters and the environment. The invitation is free and open for anyone, guests may come and go as they please throughout.

Loghaven will have a limited number of chairs available and guests are welcome to bring a chair to sit and watch.

"For though the slaves were listed as mules on the plantation, they sang work songs, humanizing labor, and spirituals, humanizing travail. Disrupted from the land of the South into the cities in a second Middle Passage--the Middle passage that all the natives of the globe are undergoing today--they created jazz. And above all they sang the blues. Work songs, spirituals, blues, jazz were the counter-poetics native and indigenous to the American continent, subterraneously subversive of its surface reality."

- Sylvia Wynter, Black Metamorphosis

* This work involves a cast of many. For the purposes of this works-in-progress, the material will be deconstructed through a solo, site-specific methodology *
