False Idol, True God is a collection of two-dimensional works that depict characters and scenes from a mythical narrative inspired by Southeast Asian folklore and aesthetics. Many of the works utilize collage, which reflects the nature of this narrative, as it was developed by piecing together bits of information about certain characters, events, and objects.
The title False Idol, True God presents a dichotomy in which it is implied that there is a true meaning to divinity. What does it mean to become closer to godliness? Do we become closer to the divine by pursuing a higher calling or by becoming wholly aware of what we are? In summary, this story embodies a personal revelation and embraces rebellion against a higher calling.
